Field note 12 · SEO & Content Architecture
Internal Linking for Service WebsitesConnect Pages With a Purpose
A practical framework for connecting service pages, Insights and topic clusters so users and search systems can understand which pages matter and how the content relates.
Internal linking is often reduced to “add more links between pages.” That can create activity without creating structure.
A useful internal-link system should help both visitors and search systems understand which page owns a commercial topic, which articles support it and what the logical next step is.
Section 01
Give every important page a clear role
Before adding links, decide what each page exists to do.
For a service website, pages usually fall into roles such as:
- commercial service pages;
- service hubs;
- pricing and conversion pages;
- informational Insights;
- trust pages;
- legal or operational pages.
If two pages are both trying to own exactly the same commercial search intent, adding links between them does not solve the underlying ambiguity.
GrowthFlint therefore assigns one primary search and business role to each important page before building topic clusters.
Section 02
Connect service and article relationships
A supporting article should help a relevant money page rather than exist as an isolated traffic asset.
A simple relationship may look like:
Insight → primary service → related Insight → logical CTA.
For example, a Shopify-versus-WooCommerce comparison can naturally connect to both ecommerce services and conversion optimization. A technical-indexing article should connect more strongly to Advanced SEO than to an unrelated branding service.
This creates a topic network based on meaning rather than arbitrary link counts.
Section 03
Use descriptive anchor text
Internal anchor text should help the user understand what will open.
Useful anchors can include:
- WordPress Website Development;
- Google Ads Management;
- Website Maintenance & Performance;
- Technical SEO Before Google Indexing.
Generic anchors such as “click here” are sometimes acceptable in interface controls, but descriptive contextual links usually provide more information.
Do not force exact-match keywords into every link. Natural language should remain readable.
Section 04
Find orphan pages and dead ends
An important public page with no meaningful internal links can be difficult for users and crawlers to discover.
Audit:
- pages absent from navigation and hubs;
- articles with no service relationship;
- service pages with no supporting content;
- old URLs still linked internally through redirects;
- pages where every next action leads away from the relevant topic.
The objective is not that every page links to every other page. It is that important pages participate in a coherent journey.
Section 05
Let the system grow without becoming chaotic
As the Insights library expands, manual linking becomes harder to maintain.
A scalable system can define:
- primary service ownership;
- topic clusters;
- related-article components;
- hub pages;
- consistent service-card relationships;
- rules for future content.
GrowthFlint’s own Insights system uses this approach so new Field Notes automatically become part of the wider library while Connected Capabilities remain relevant to the specific article.
Section 06
Measure and refine the structure
Internal linking can be evaluated through:
- crawl discovery;
- Search Console page and query patterns;
- landing-page behavior;
- service-page engagement;
- orphan-page audits;
- conversion journeys from informational content.
If an article gains visibility but never moves users toward another useful GrowthFlint page, the content may need a stronger relationship to the commercial architecture.
This work sits naturally inside Advanced SEO, while the website architecture itself may require WordPress Website Development when the current system cannot support clean content relationships.
How many internal links should a page have?
There is no useful universal number. Add links where they improve discovery, understanding or navigation.
Should every article link to a service?
For a commercial agency Insights strategy, usually yes when a genuine relationship exists. A forced service link on an unrelated article is not useful.
Can too many internal links be a problem?
Yes, if they make the page difficult to read or create a meaningless network. More links are not automatically better links.
Do footer links count?
They are still internal links, but contextual links inside relevant content communicate a different relationship from global navigation.
A strong internal-link system turns separate pages into one understandable website architecture.
